Marcus Weiss

Marcus Weiss is one of today’s most renowned and versatile saxophonists. His repertoire includes works from throughout the history of the saxophone, from its impressionist beginnings in France to the present day. With a large number of premieres of new works both as a soloist and with chamber ensembles, he has contributed to the development of a new repertoire for his instrument, as well as working on works by Georges Aperghis, Baltakas Vykintas, Birkenkötter Jörg, John Cage, Aldo Clementi, Beat Furrer, Stefano Gervasoni, Globokar Vinko, Georg Friedrich Haas, Manuel Hidalgo, Toshio Hosokawa, Michael Jarrell, Hanspeter Kyburz, Jo Kondo, Helmut Lachenmann, Detlev Müller-Siemens, Giorgio Netti, Brice Pauset, Rolf Riehm, Johannes Schöllhorn, Salvatore Sciarrino, Elliott Sharp, Mauricio Sotelo, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Christina Wolff, Walter Zimmermann and many others.

Marcus Weiss was born in 1961 in Basel (Switzerland). He studied saxophone under the tutelage of Iwan Roth at the Hochschule für Musik Base, as well as with Frederick L. Hemke at Northwestern University (Chicago).

He has performed as soloist with various European orchestras, as well as with the “Klangforum”, “Ensemble Contrechamps“, “Ensemble Recherche”, “Ensemble Modern”, “Chamber Orchestra of Europe”, “German Chamber Philharmonic” and others. His performances as soloist and chamber musician take him to festivals such as the Wien Modern, the Festival d’Automne in Paris, at the Munich Biennale, the Zurich New Music Days, Salzburg Festival, Eclat Stuttgart, summer courses in Darmstadt, the Warsaw Autumn, and at various festivals in Berlin and also to Austria, France, Italy, Spain, England, Scotland, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, USA and Japan.

As a chamber musician Marcus Weiss joins in recent years, creating his own formations with the “TRIO ACCANTO” (with Nicolas Hodges, piano and Christian Dierstein, percussion) or the saxophone quartet XASAX.

Since 1995, Marcus Weiss is professor of saxophone and chamber music at the Academy of Music in Basel, Switzerland.
