Jing Shao

Jing Shao was born in ZunYi, China, where she began her musical studies in her hometown at the age of 4. In 1997 she moved to Shanghai to continue her studies at the ‘Shanghai Conservatory of Music’ where she studied at the intermediate and advanced levels with Professors Fei Wu and Xidi Shen and won the 2nd prize in the national viola competition twice in a row.

After finishing her studies in China, she moved to Europe (2003), to continue her training at the ‘Musikhochschule Cologne (Aachen)’, being a disciple of the prestigious Maestro Massimo Paris, with whom she also studied the postgraduate ‘konzertexamen’. There she received the 1st prize of the ‘Köln Musikhochschule Viola Competition’. As a soloist he performed concerts at the ‘Orpheo-Musikfestivel’ in Holland and gave several recitals at the FIAPMSE Festival, as well as performing with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid at the Auditorio Nacional; under the baton of Jesús López-Cobos; the solo viola part in the work ‘Don Quijote’ by Richard Strauss and under the baton of Pablo González the Sinfonía Concertante by W. A. Mozart.

In 2007 he obtained the position of assistant soloist in the ‘Sinfonie Orchestra Aachen’ in Germany. A year later, he won the position of viola soloist in the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Orquesta titular del Teatro Real, a post he will hold until 2022. He also collaborated as solo viola in the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria.

Since 2008 he has participated in numerous chamber concerts in the cycle of ‘Sunday Concerts’, which are held at the Teatro Real in various formations, such as string trio, string quartet, piano quintet, etc. which are held at the Teatro Real in various ensembles, such as string trio, string quartet, piano quintet, etc.

Since 2008, she has also been a viola tutor in the orchestra school of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid; during this period, she has also participated in projects such as ‘Talentos Musicales’ and ‘Ayuda a niños con síndrome de Down y autismo’.

In 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2023, Jing Shao was invited to give master classes at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Málaga, the music festival ‘CASTILLA Y LEÓN master class for piano, string and chamber musicians’, the Conservatorio Superior de Música ‘Progreso musical’ in Madrid, and the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska in Madrid.

Since 2017 she is co-founder of the publishing and recording company ‘Da_sh Music’.

In 2020 she obtained a Master’s degree in ‘Pedagogy for Musicians’ from the Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña (ESMUC).

In the same year he recorded the album ‘Crossroads’, which contains contemporary works for viola, double bass and piano trio; it is now distributed by Spotify, Apple music and Amazon music.

In 2023 she obtained the position of viola teacher at the Katarina Gurska Superior Centre in Madrid, Spain and since 2023 she is co-founder of the music education organisation and artist agency ‘China Wharton Music’.

Jing Shao plays a viola made in Venice in 1906 by the Italian master luthier ‘Giulio Degani’.
