Alexander Zemtsov

Principal viola of London Philharmonic Orchestra (2002-2012)

Professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne and Haute Ecole de Musique Lausanne.

Alexander Zemtsov is one of the most versatile and sought-after musicians in the music world today. He has received acclaim as a violist, conductor, professor and chamber musician.

Zemtsov was born in 1978 in a family of musicians. In Moscow he attended the Gnessin Academy of Music, a renowned school for gifted children, where he studied under Professor Elena Ozol. He continued his studies with Professor Michael Kugel at the Hogeschool in Maastricht and post-graduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin (class of Professor Tabea Zimmermann).

At the age of twenty-three Zemtsov was appointed Principal Violist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2011, after nine years of collaboration with the LPO, Zemtsov left the position and dedicated himself entirely to his demanding career as a soloist, conductor and chamber musician.

His mastery of the viola has won him many awards, among them the first prizes at the ‘Classical Legacy’ International Competition in Moscow in 1995), at the Elise Meyer competition in Hamburg in 1997 and at the Eighth Brahms competition in Poertschach, in Austria, in 2001. As a chamber musician he has performed in the world’s most prestigious venues with such partners as Peter Donohoe, Patrick Gallois, Itamar Golan, Natalia Gutman, Misha Maisky. Gerhard Schulz and Dmitri Sitkovetsky. His recordings as violist have appeared on the Chandos, LPO Live, Navis Classics and Naxos and Toccata Classics labels.

His conducting debut took place in Finland in 2014 with the Lappeenranta Symphony Orchestra which brought him invitations to conduct Sinfonia Finlandia and Pori Sinfonietta In Finland. In 2017 highly acclaimed concert and Live Broadcast with the Bulgarian National Radio- Symphony Orchestra with Mischa Maisky as a soloist followed by invitations to conduct worldwide. In 2018 he conducted Mannheim Chamber Orchestra and OZM Dortmund in Germany, the Rijeka Opera Theatre in Croatia for performances of Tchaikovsky’s ballet- ”The Nutcracker”. After his debut in China September 2018 with Liaoning Symphony Orchestra established a relationship with several programs for the following seasons. The concert in December 2018 with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra with Tabea Zimmermann as soloist was very highly acclaimed and brought him numerous re-invitations. Alexander Zemtsov is member at the LEAD! program where he is collaborating as viola mentor and conducting assistant of Jukka-Pekka Saraste In February 2020 he debuted as opera conductor in Aleko by Rachmaninov at the Ukrainian National Opera in Kyiv which followed by immediate re-invitation for next season. In 2015 Alexander Zemtsov was appointed artistic director and conductor of the International New Symphony Orchestra (INSO) in Lviv, giving this multinational German-Russian-Ukrainian-Jewish musician the role of an “Ambassador of Peace” in Ukraine, aiming to bring Peace and Unity through music. In 2021 Alexander Zemtsov conducted London Philharmonic Orchestra on a tour in Spain.

Alexander Zemtsov is viola professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne and Haute Ecole de Musique Lausanne. Many of his students are members and section leaders in major orchestras around the world as well as winners of international competitions.
