Boris Kuschnir was born into a musical family in Kiev in 1948. He studied violin with Boris Belenky at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and chamber music with Valentin Berlinsky of the Borodin Quartet. His numerous encounters with Dmitri Shostakovich (working on his late quartets) and David Oistrakh, with whom he also studied, had a lasting influence on his artistic development.
He has lived in Austria since 1981. In 1984 he obtained the title of Professor at the University of Music and Arts in Vienna and in 1999 he became Professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. His reputation as a teacher has been recognised internationally by the recent successes of his students Julian Rachlin, Nikolaj Znaider, Sergey Dogadin, Maria Dueñas, Pavel Milyukov, Lidia Baich, Dalibor Karvay and Alexandra Soumm.
