Sofía Navarro Escaño

Sofía Navarro Escaño

A sincere and poetic artist, for Sofia music is a search for emotion and beauty: a refined exploration, expressing truth and depth through sound. Sofía transmits to the public the value and message of music through its colours, depth and perennial feeling.

Sofía Navarro (Madrid, 1996), a violinist born into a family of architects, keeps her first musical impressions from the age of three, when her parents gave her a violin as a present. In 2010 she made her debut as a soloist accompanied by the Moscow Young Artists Orchestra as part of the “Noches del Real Sitio” Festival. That same year she made recordings for RTVE (Radio Televisión Española) as part of the programme “Jóvenes Solistas” (Young Soloists).

Sofia has studied continuously with her mentor Olga Vilkomirskaia, a former student and heir to the violin legacy of David Oistrakh. Having previously studied in Madrid on a scholarship from the Katarina Gurska Foundation at the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska, as well as at the Royal College of Music of London (London, UK), Sofia has completed a Master’s degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) with Professor Ilya Grubert (Tchaikovsky Prize, 1978). Awarded an “Excellence Scholarship” by the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, Sofía has graduated with Great Honorary Distinction from the Concert Soloist Postgraduate Programme of the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Antwerp, Belgium), in the prestigious class of Alexei Moshkov.

Since her debut, Sofía Navarro has performed as a soloist with orchestras and ensembles such as the Orquesta del Real Sitio, the CSKG Conducting Programme Orchestra, the Moscow Young Artists Orchestra and the Ensemble Galilei. In addition, Sofía plays regularly both in recital and chamber music: she is a regular duo with pianist Ángel Martín del Burgo and a member of the Dima Quartet and the Trio 1900. Together with the latter, she has won prizes in the Chamber Music Competition of Juventudes Musicales ‘Ciudad de Ávila’ and in the V Turniej Kameralny Bydgoszcz (Poland, 2018).

She has also given concerts as a member of various ensembles, such as the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra, Royal College of Music Philharmonic, Conservatorium van Amsterdam Symfonieorkest, Royal Conservatory Antwerp Symfonieorkest, Score Collective, Proyecto Xenakis, Orquesta Presjovem, Ensemble Galilei and JORCAM.

Sofia currently combines her teaching work at the Katarina Gurska Music Education Centre with her concert activity. She has given concerts and recitals in various venues in England, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, Portugal and Spain, such as the Royal Festival Hall, Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, Alexandra Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, Bernard Haitinkzaal, deSingel Antwerpen, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Mezquita de Córdoba, Auditorio de Zaragoza, Auditorio Ciudad de León, Auditorio Príncipe Felipe de Oviedo, Teatro López de Ayala de Badajoz, CentroCentro Cibeles and Belgais Center for the Arts (where she shared the stage with the legendary pianist Maria João Pires). Finally, Sofía focuses her artistic work on music and visual art, dedicating herself to analogue photography. Her images have been published accompanying the poems in the books Según contaba el molinero and Los amores de madera (Ed. Cuadernos del Laberinto).
